Here Comes the Sun


You know that incredible feeling when the sun hits you perfectly and warms up your entire body and mood? We love that feeling, especially when it happens at work.

The relationship between individuals and their environment can be a crucial determinant of how they feel, perform and interact with others. So, why not design office spaces that inspire, energize and support the people who use them?

Human beings have a natural desire to be connected to nature- this concept is called biophilia. From natural light, bright colors to healthy, organic materials, biophilic design effectively incorporates natural elements into the workplace. With biophilic design, we can create workspaces that support the ways in which employees work best and provide them with environments that are energizing, calming and stimulating.


We recently did our own little office experiment with three plants to determine how natural light affects performance. Looking at the photo above, we placed the plant on the right directly near a window with tons of access to natural light, the plant in the middle near a moderate access to natural light and the plant on the left near no access to natural light.

Note that the plant with the most access to natural light grew almost two times more than the plant with no access to natural light. Natural light really can help make a difference in performance! In a way, we can compare these little plants to employees and their productivity. The more access you have to natural light, the better you will feel and perform.

Natural light can help increase productivity and contribute to overall employee health and well-being. Workers in office environments with natural elements, such as greenery and sunlight, report a 15% higher level of well-being, are 6% more productive and are 15% more creative (Human Spaces). Bring on the sunshine!

Fast Company recently sat down with design experts to uncover the top trends to watch for in 2016. Experts, like Teknion’s Steve Delfino, share 8 office trends to help keep workers more engaged and make the most use out of their office space. Here’s a short summary of their findings:

1. Hiding the Wires

Many workers have expressed their frustrations with cluttered desktops and long wires peeking out from their desks. Manufacturers are developing more effective solutions to help eliminate this clutter and create more clean, simple desktop solutions.


2. Bringing the Outdoors Inside

3.  Multi-Purpose Workspaces
